ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder manifests in childhood. Patients are presented with symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity which significantly affect their social, cognitive and behavioral development. While there is no cure for ADHD, medications can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life of the patients.
Stimulants
Stimulants are commonly prescribed for ADHD in children and adolescents. They work by increasing the neurotransmitter activity of the central nervous system. However, stimulants may cause a range of side effects including loss of appetite and trouble sleeping. They should not be taken in the evening. Due to the risk of addiction, stimulants should be avoided in patients with a history of substance abuse.
Non-stimulants
In some cases, non-stimulants (e.g. Atomoxetine) are used to treat ADHD in children, adolescents as well as adults. Atomoxetine is a safe and well-tolerated alternative for those who experience side effects or do not respond well to stimulants. Unlike stimulants which can take effect within a few hours, Atomoxetine may take several weeks before improvements can be seen.
