Alopecia is also known as hair loss. In men, androgenetic alopecia is the most common one form of alopecia. It is characterized by the slow and progressive loss of hair in a pattern. Over a period of time, the hairline may recede to form a characteristic “M” shape. Hair may also progress to thin near the top of the head.

5α-reductase inhibitors
Finasteride is the first-line oral treatment option for androgenetic alopecia. Finasteride exerts its effect by inhibiting the enzymatic conversion to dihydrotestosterone which is a key hormone that promotes male androgenetic alopecia. It has demonstrated a high level of efficacy and tolerability in randomized controlled trials. Finasteride should not be used in women of childbearing potential.
