Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders worldwide. According to WHO, 1 in 13 suffers from anxiety. There are various types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and social phobia. Patients with anxiety disorders may feel restless and fatigue easily. They may also experience difficulty in concentrating and muscle tension.

Antidepressants
SSRIs and SNRIs are the first-line treatment options for anxiety disorders. The efficacy of SSRIs and SNRIs appear to be similar. Escitalopram and Venlafaxine are both indicated for the treatment of GAD, panic disorder and social phobia. Escitalopram is shown to be more effective and better tolerated than Paroxetine.

Pregabalin
Pregabalin is effective in both acute treatment and relapse prevention of GAD. It is thought to exert similar anxiolytic effects to benzodiazepines with a significantly lower risk of dependence. It also has an early onset of action. Relief of the symptoms of GAD is usually observed after the first week.

Quetiapine
Extended-release Quetiapine is the second-line treatment option for GAD when antidepressants are contraindicated or not responding. Compared with antidepressants and Pregabalin, Quetiapine is associated with more sedation and weight gain.
