GERD
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. Certain factors increase a person’s risk of developing GERD, e.g. obesity, pregnancy and fatty or spicy food. Some of the common symptoms of GERD are sour taste, heart burn and regurgitation.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
PPIs (e.g. Pantoprazole, Esomeprazole) exert their therapeutic action by inhibiting gastric acid secretion. They provide fast symptomatic relief of GERD and promote healing of the esophagus. Pantoprazole is indicated for erosive esophagitis associated with GERD. The usual duration of treatment with Pantoprazole is 4-8 weeks. PPIs are recommended to be taken 30 minutes before the first meal because the efficacy of PPIs is the greatest after a prolonged fast.
H2 antagonist
H2 antagonist (e.g. Famotidine) is well-tolerated medications for the maintenance treatment of GERD. However, the efficacy of H2 antagonist may be reduced due to tolerance after several weeks. Combination use of H2 antagonist and PPI is generally not preferred because H2 antagonist may diminish the efficacy of PPI.
