Influenza
Influenza is an acute respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B virus that takes place worldwide, mainly during winter seasons. Common signs and symptoms include fever, headache, myalgia and weakness.
Vaccination
Yearly vaccination is the primary means of preventing and controlling influenza. Each year, vaccination is made with reference to the recommended composition by WHO. Certain high risk groups are subsidized in Hong Kong, including pregnant women, persons aged 50 or above, children aged 6 months to under 12 years and persons with intellectual disability. It should be noted that vaccination should always be used as first-line for influenza prophylaxis.
Neuraminidase inhibitors
Oseltamivir is the most widely used drug against influenza. It is FDA-approved and CDC-recommended for use against recently circulating influenza virus. It is suitable for patients whose flu symptoms have not lasted for more than 2 days. Oseltamivir is generally well tolerated, however, paediatric patients should be monitored for behavioural changes, a rare side effect.
