Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of an organic disease. It is generally related to defecation and change in frequency and form of stool.

Anticholinergics
Anticholinergics inhibit the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to smooth muscle relaxation of the gastrointestinal tract. Although systemic anticholinergics are effective in the symptomatic relief of IBS, the patients may experience systemic side effects including dry mouth, blurred vision and urinary retention.

Mebeverine is an anticholinergic selectively acting on the gastrointestinal tract. It has been proven effective in placebo-controlled trials by achieving higher mean scores than placebo groups on most measures used to determine efficacy. Mebeverine is also a safe and well tolerated drug with no significant adverse events.
