Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting is a common adverse effect in cancer treatment. Nausea refers to the unpleasant sensation when one is about to vomit. This might be caused by radiation to gastrointestinal tract, liver or brain or chemotherapy agents that are emetic.

5-HT3 antagonists
Ondansetron is a 5-HT3 antagonist. It is commonly used in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV) and post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Common side effects include headache and constipation.

NK-1 antagonists
Aprepitant is an NK-1 antagonist. It is used together with ondansetron and dexamethasone as a combination therapy to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy. Aprepitant is supplied in 3-day treatment pack (Tri-Pack) containing one 125 mg capsule and two 80 mg capsules.
