Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder mainly leading to inflammation of joints. It is characterized by swelling, stiffness and pain in joints on both sides of the body at the same time. It may sometimes cause systemic inflammation of other organs such as eyes, heart and lung. Currently, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but the disease progression can be slowed down by disease-modifying treatment.

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)
Methotrexate and Leflunomide are the first-line DMARDs with similar efficacy but different safety profile. However, both are contraindicated in pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential may need to use effective contraception up to 2 years after the discontinuation of Leflunomide. Blood tests should be performed regularly during the treatment.
