Urticaria is an allergic skin reaction characterized by symptoms including itching, swelling and rashes. In most case, treatment is not required because the patients usually recover within a few days. However, for patients with chronic urticaria, symptomatic treatment with antihistamines is recommended.

Antihistamines
Non-sedating antihistamines are the first-line option for chronic urticaria. Fexofenadine is less sedating than other second generation antihistamines such as cetirizine. It is available in once-daily dosing. First generation antihistamines are not recommended due to anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision and urinary retention.
